Containment increases to 38%; Evacuations lifted on Fielder Mountain Fire

ROGUE RIVER, Ore. – Firefighters on the Fielder Mountain Fire continue to push mop-up activities deeper into the fire interior, securing the perimeter and increasing containment to 38%. Evacuations for the fire area were canceled Monday morning as a reflection of the increased containment and reduced risk of the fire moving across containment lines. For firefighter safety please limit driving in the area as equipment and firefighting activity is still occurring along roadways.

Across the fire area mop-up has reached a depth of more than 100 feet into the fire perimeter, this depth increases to 300 feet surrounding residences and other structures. Overhead hazards, such as trees and snags, are being felled to reduce hazards as crews are mopping up. Methodical gridding of the area adjacent to the fireline, searching for heat or smoke, reduces the potential of fire rekindling and moving outside established lines.

Firefighters are using infra-red technology to identify areas of heat which may not be visible on the surface, such as burning roots. These areas are flagged and mapped overnight, then day shift resources are able to expose the burning material and use water to cool and extinguish any heat.

Critical weather conditions are expected today with temperatures in the low 90’s, humidity in the teens to mid-20’s, and increased winds with gusts to 15 MPH. Increased fire behavior is likely to occur, testing firelines and possibly igniting unburned vegetation inside the fire perimeter. Firefighters will be on alert for this elevated fire activity.

Receptive fuels in combination with this weather increase the risk of rapid fire growth from new starts. Resources on the fire are identified to support initial attack response with local agencies, including aircraft assigned to the incident.

Structure assessment determined that, during the initial attack, two outbuildings sustained minor damage and one outbuilding was destroyed.
