PRINEVILLE, Ore. (July 29, 2026) — Firefighters continue to build on recent progress across portions of the Rowe Creek Complex-West Zone while concentrating resources in areas where active fire behavior continues to challenge suppression efforts.
In partnership with other incident management teams across Central Oregon, incident officials will host a community meeting tomorrow, Thursday, July 30, at 6 p.m. at Barnes Butte Elementary School at 1875 NE Ironhorse Drive in Prineville. Officials will provide operational updates for the Rowe Creek Complex and Coyote, Henry, and Shingle Fires, followed by a breakout Q&A session. On the western edge of the fire, operations are transitioning into mop-up and patrol. Firefighters are systematically locating and extinguishing remaining hotspots and monitoring for any signs of renewed fire activity. Along the southwest portion of the fire, between Grizzly Road and McKay Creek Road, crews made significant progress securing hotspots around homes and infrastructure. That work will continue today.
On the southern portion of the fire, east of McKay Creek Road, firefighters remain engaged where the fire crossed control lines in several locations. Crews are working aggressively to secure these areas using a combination of direct attack, handline construction, aviation and heavy equipment. Fire managers continue to prioritize this section of the fire, where fuels and fire behavior remain challenging.
Along the southeastern flank, firefighters continue preparing for the fire’s movement through the Mill Creek Wilderness toward Highway 26. Resources are strengthening and improving control features ahead of the fire’s advance to increase the likelihood that lines will hold north of the highway.
Structural protection resources continue supporting wildland operations throughout the incident. Task forces are reinforcing and patrolling protection lines around homes in the Mill Creek, Johnson Creek and McKay Creek Road areas, as well as residences near Grizzly Road. Dedicated resources also remain assigned to protecting homes and the Ochoco Christian Conference Center along the Highway 26 corridor.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect continued traffic impacts as firefighting operations remain active along Highway 26. Please check current conditions on TripCheck.com before departing and allow extra time for travel.
Smoke remains a concern across Central Oregon this morning. Air quality in Prineville is expected to improve from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups or Unhealthy conditions this morning to Moderate or Good conditions this afternoon before deteriorating again overnight. Much of Crook County is expected to experience a similar pattern, with air quality improving during the day before smoke settles back into valleys and lower elevations overnight.
Firefighters remain focused on strengthening control lines, protecting homes and infrastructure, and building on recent operational successes.

A “TFR” is in place for the fire area daily (24 hours) until further notice. Flying a drone near or around a wildfire is illegal and compromises the safety of both pilots and firefighters and interferes with firefighting efforts. If you fly, we can’t.
