Fielder Mountain Fire 81% contained, ODF CIMT 1 transfers incident back to district
ROGUE RIVER, Ore. – Progress continues across the Fielder Mountain Fire as resources get closer to completing mop-up operations and repair work. Firefighters have made strides over the last couple of shifts to bring containment of the fire up to 81%. With this work nearly complete, Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT) 1 will be transferring command of the fire back to the ODF Southwest Oregon District at 6 p.m. tonight.
Local district personnel have been shadowing ODF CIMT 1 for the past day to gain situational awareness about the status of the fire and the work that needs to be completed. Today’s dayshift will provide another opportunity to transfer information, providing a smooth transition both on and off the fireline.
Firefighters still assigned to the fire will continue mopping up along the western and northern control lines to extinguish any remaining hotspots within the first 300-feet of the fire’s perimeter. Repair work is also ongoing, with resources continuing to build water bars and flatten bulldozer berms across the incident. Roads in the fire area will be left open to allow for future use if needed.
Today, isolated thunderstorms are in the forecast for southern Oregon and beyond, with temperatures predicted in the mid-90s. Lightning on dry vegetation can naturally spark new wildfires, and while ODF CIMT 1 is transitioning off the incident, team personnel are available to aid on any new major fire starts in the area should the local district request it.
While lightning-caused fires can’t be prevented, human starts can; help prevent new wildfires by following all current regulations, found here: www.oregon.gov/odf/fire/pages/restrictions.aspx and https://www.blm.gov/programs/fire/regional-info/oregon-washington/fire-restrictions. These everyday activities are known to cause fires, and following regulations does decrease accidental human starts.
